1990 Honda GB500TT Cafe Racer

Mimicking the aesthetics of 1950s and ’60s British racing motorcycles like the Velocette Thruxton, it sported a black-and-gold paint scheme, clip-on handlebars, and a humped racing seat, embodying a modernized café racer. Unveiled in 1989, the GB500 defied the contemporary trend of high-powered, multi-cylinder bikes, boasting 33 HP, a 5-speed gearbox, and adept handling.

Though only available in the U.S. for two years, it swiftly became a sought-after collector’s item, maintaining its value due to meticulous preservation. Regrettably, its fate paralleled other exceptional motorcycles, admired but often stored rather than ridden.

Despite its 1980s context, the GB500 remains a timeless classic, combining handsome aesthetics with competence, embodying the spirit of vintage motorcycles while incorporating modern features for enhanced safety and performance on the road.

The 2024 Dakar Rally at a glance

For 2023, the fifth Saudi Arabia Dakar took riders from the Northwestern city of Al-`Ula to the shores of the Red Sea, passing through the oceans of dunes in the Empty Quarter to land in Yanbu – a 4,766-mile trek that lasted from January 5-19.

During those days, competitors had to complete timed sections of the Rally (titled “specials”) to determine a winner, with a single rest day given to recover from the tough terrain and rugged environs.

Overall, the Dakar 2024 landed the following final results board (courtesy of the Dakar’s website):

Honda’s Monster Energy team efforts

We’re told that this year’s iteration of the Rally saw the Honda Monster Energy team name taking lead the majority of the way, with occasional challenges presented by Spaniard Tosha Schareina (who snatched the prologue at the beginning of the Rally) and Chilean José Ignacio “Nacho” Cornejo, who took the lead for a full day after Stage 4.

After the 48-hour Chrono stage, Brabec stayed in front and refused to hand over his crown, creating the following stats for Monster Energy Honda:

  • Ricky Brabec: First Place
  • Adrien Van Beveren: Third Place
  • Jose Cornejo: Sixth Place

What does Ricky have to say about this year’s Rally win?

Naturally, Ricky is extremely happy with the results, though stage 11 purportedly had Brabec a bit worried when Ross started the stage 18 minutes behind.

Upon completion of the Dakar, Brabec was quoted as being grateful that everyone stayed safe during the grueling event:

Ross and my own team kept me on my toes, but not just me, I think we were keeping everyone on each other’s toes. It was definitely a fight to the end for everyone. I’m really happy we’re all here and all safe, and we can go home.

I think number 9 will be my lucky number from now on.”

  • Paul Yaffe is the owner of three “World’s Most Beautiful Motorcycle” awards and the mastermind behind this one-off BMW R 18 Transcontinental
  • R 18 Transcontinental aesthetic is modded to “Hot Rod meets Lead Sled”
  • Yaffe’s final brainchild debuted at the Motorbike Expo in Verona, Italy

A guy named Paul Yaffe has taken a BMW R 18 Transcontinental and made it look fast, standing still.

According to BMW’s press release, Paul Yaffe’s project of “simplifying” a BMW R 18 Transcontinental into a Hot Rod with Lead Sled inspiration, the custom job began with a 3800-mile ride.

Wouldn’t do to start building up a bike without getting a feel for the machine’s personality, Yeah?

That ride must have done what it needed to because here is the final product:

A quarter front view of a hot rod motorcycle. A side view of a hot rod motorcycle. A back quarter view of a hot rod motorcycle. A silhouette of a hot rod motorcycle and rider.

The process of Building a BMW Hot Rod

According to the release, Yaffe created a 26” x 5.5” front wheel out of a 400lb block of aluminum for the rolling duties; the process involved a handmade 180mm front tire.

Yaffe added the wheels to a stretched chassis, increasing rake angle and engineering special triple trees with a steel front fender to keep the project relevant.

Restructured bodywork joined a new chin spoiler, while Monkey Bars (ape hangers) were added for the cool factor; the back end, meanwhile, saw Yaffe putting taillights into handmade filler panels, keeping space for the license plate.

For the “Leda Sled” aesthetic, we’re told that the air suspension and side pipes were done up with a bit of frame that was installed underneath the bike’s saddlebags.

Very neat.

Bringing it back to BMW

So how does this build keep true to that unforgettable Bavarian flavour?

Yaffe says there’s still a bit of BMW essence in there, stowed in the side exhaust. Here’s an excerpt from the press release on everything that went into that special pipe component:

“Retaining the classic Boxer head pipes was non-negotiable in Paul’s vision.

The catalytic converters were removed from the head pipes making way for a bespoke perforated high-flow baffle system. This innovation not only replaced the restrictive emissions system but also retained essential back pressure for optimal performance.

To further enhance the auditory experience a precision-crafted, 3-step muffler system was introduced for reversion.

The final touch was a wide-open megaphone, delivering that quintessential classic hot rod sound.”

What was the overall vision with this build?

Yaffe didn’t just want a Hot Rod; according to the release, he was keen on “simplicity and allure” – two terms that don’t always go hand in hand.

The final decision? A glossy black married to a classic ochs blood red interior, which was matched to the front calipers.

“We went to work perfecting all the fabricated body panels and smoothing everything to a glass-like finish. The trick is not to overdo it!

We think it came out spectacular!”

  • They offer a stylish Harness boot look, but they also provide excellent protection and style with their full leather construction and TPU reinforcements.
  • The Goodyear rubber sole ensures a confident ride and solid footing at a stop.
  • These square-toe boots are a must-have, offering style, protection, and an affordable price that deserves serious consideration.

Street & Steel Square Toe Boots

Street & Steel is a house brand that is within the Cycle Gear family of products. They primarily target the Cruiser, Touring, Custom, and Cafe crowd with lots of leather and traditional styling. These Square Toe boots stay true to the traditional Harness boot style favored by bikers since the dawn of time.

First Impressions

I concede that I do tend to have some preconceived notions about house brands, especially those that tend to offer items at entry-level price points. You got me Street & Steel, when I first lifted the box lid, these boots looked far better than I expected.

In my head, I was prepared to open the box and find these boots were made from something that more closely resembled a Weather Tech floor mat than any proper hide from a cow. I am happy to report I was totally wrong.

Features

Street and Steel Square Toe Boots

Design

Street & Steel has designed these boots along classic motorcycle harness styles. With an 11” rise, classic squared toe, and  1 5/8. inch walking heel. The harness straps are fitted with solid rivets and nice chrome rings.

Street & Steel provides additional reinforcement around the toe box and the heel, plus there is a midsole shank which helps significantly on the footpegs.

Material

2.0 mm Cowhide is used throughout the body of the boots. It was more supple than I expected and has formed in nicely to my foot after just a few rides and walks into the pub.

The sole is high-traction Goodyear rubber, perfect on both floorboards and pegs. The insole is listed as anti-vibration, and I found it was adequate but I would prefer a little more cushion.

Protection

I cannot 100% confirm, but the midsole shank and the toe and heel reinforcements are most likely made from a Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). It is a very common material for this type of protection and works quite well.

TPU toe caps are much lighter than steel or alloy toe caps. They provide the same level of protection as steel and alloy toe caps without the extra weight.

Fit and Comfort

Side view of the Street and Steel Square Toe Boots

Harness boots, much like cowboy boots, can be a bit of a challenge to get on your foot when they are brand new, and I had that issue with these. What I discovered is due to my foot width, even though for many they are true to the size chart, bumping up one size gave me a perfect fit.

Streel & Steel wisely provides 2 hefty pull tabs and they are very well sewn in. Trust me I tested it. With each use as the boots broke in, they became easier to slip on. I appreciate the harness strap for the secure feeling it provides when wearing a laceless boot.

If you choose to order these boots online, just keep this in mind. The size guide is quite good for those with a standard-width foot. If you are on the wider side, consider ordering one full size up.

Build Quality and Construction

Upper Boot

Closeup of the upper boot

The opening at the top of the 11” uppers easily accommodates larger calves, and still fit nicely under my riding jeans. The 2.0 mm leather has a hand-polished finish that softened nicely as I wore them, but didn’t develop excessive wrinkles, or collapse.

Reinforcement

Closeup of the reinforced toe area

There are added layers of leather on the top of the foot and around the heel area, to provide additional protection and durability. I was quite happy to notice zero initial wear after 3 rides, and multiple gear changes. Not a scuff to be found from my gear selector.

Stitching

Stitching over the heel and ankle on the boot

Street & Steel has overlaid the heel and forefoot sections nicely. As with most lower-priced boots, multiple segments of leather are required to be stitched to complete the product, but Street & Steel delivers an overall high level of finish.

Sole

Goodyear rubber sole on the Street and Steel Square Toe Boots

The Goodyear rubber sole of the Street & Steel Square toe boots is designed to provide exceptional traction and durability for long-lasting wear. The rugged tread pattern ensures a stable grip on various surfaces, and besides the armor, is the best reason to purchase these boots for riding, over a standard harness or cowboy boot. The grip improvement over the smooth sole of most cowboy boots makes a huge difference on the pegs, and especially on wet floorboards.

The sole of the boot is stitched into the first rubber layer, and then the final layer is glued on. You will also see that the heel section is both glued and nailed on. There is a reinforced TPU shank running up the midsole.

Insole

I can’t really praise or knock the insoles of these boots. They are basic, but have a reasonable amount of cushioning. Although listed as “Anti-vibration cushioned replaceable insole” I didn’t notice any significant reductions in vibrations off the pegs of my Harley. I will continue to wear them as they are, but I do like how they are easily removable and I can then choose to upgrade later on if I wish.

The Weight

Boots on the scale coming in at 963 grams

These boots weigh in at 963 grams (a bit over 2 lb) in a size 11, on my scale. As a comparison, my Composite toe, Dakota 6” construction boots weighed in at 1103 gr and my Ariat cowboy boots are 831 grams. Overall the weight never became a noticeable issue in either a positive or a negative way. They felt just right.

Safety Certifications

I can find no listing anywhere on the packaging or any online listing related to the boots, indicating they meet any CE ratings or any other safety certifications. Having noted that, the full leather construction and TPU reinforcements certainly offer greater protection while riding than standard fashion boots.

Riding with the Street & Steel Square Toe Boots

I tried the Street & Steel boots on all of my bikes, and I have come away much more impressed than I expected to be.

Far more at home on my Harley Davidson, and my Goldwing, the boots offered a good feel on both pegs and floorboards. I like the tread design and the give from the rubber soles. When coming to a stop regardless of what was underfoot, I felt stable. I purposely sought out loose gravel and patches of water or oil to place my feet while stopping. Every time these boots found the grip to give me confidence.

The feel on both my shift lever and my rear brake was not overly subdued due to inflexible materials. I suppose the best praise I can give is the boots never felt like something I had to focus on because they were new and a different shape.

I did ride them in some light rain, and the grippy sole again proved its worth. The boots didn’t slip on a wet floorboard and they never lost grip on wet asphalt during stops.

Final Verdict on the Street & Steel Square Toe Boots

I am really impressed. These boots come priced under $150, and for that, you get full leather construction, a nice grippy sole, and a boot with classic good looks.

I was happy how they quickly broke in, and they looked the part while riding, and kept those good looks when just walking around. These are an excellent choice that ride well and provide the exact kind of look most of the cruiser crowd will appreciate.

Room for Improvement

  • The boots are narrow. Some added width may open these boots up as an option for more bikers.
  • I will always ask for better insoles.

Favorite Aspects

  • Fit and finish are excellent
  • The chrome rings and rivets look fantastic
  • The hand-rubbed finish looks and wears nicely

For the past 25 years, I have worn custom-painted helmets. I didn’t seem to like OEM paint jobs, even the ones with graphics.

Mike Taylor Designs painted all of my first four in Redwood City. Mike was a talented and creative painter. This is the first one he painted for me. My bike hero was Mick Doohan and I wanted his graphics style in a different color scheme.

In this shot, I’m training another track rider taking him two up to show him just how much lean angle you can have and how hard you can brake. Since this 260-pound guy didn’t listen and didn’t put his hands against the tank to brace himself when I used the brakes, I stopped and told him to walk back to the pits since he couldn’t effing follow instructions.

After I discovered that my Arai Quantum II was way too old to protect me, I tried to find out if Mike was still in business.

Alas, he was not. I was very disappointed since the custom paint on my most recent helmet (the third copy after crashing twice on track) was sentimental because it represented my family and Mick. I started to search for a new painter and several of the ones I contacted never responded or stated they didn’t do airbrush painting.

Daneen was one of the painters I contacted using her website web form. I just figured like the others I’d get no response. Two weeks after I sent her an email, I got a response! Halleluiah I thought to myself. Someone in this day and age responds instead of a no-response FU.

She stated that she would be interested in my project. We went back and forth via email since the helmet I ordered was delayed in delivery a couple of times. That was a mixed blessing because I got a better sense of who she is as a person from her writing. She gave me the price,$1,000 which is about what I expected for a job like this.

And since I too am a creative which I’ve done as my sole living for the past 12 years, I know the value of time and skill. Some have asked if I have an hourly rate since I offer either a half-day or full-day rate. I simply say I’m like a legitimate hotel, I don’t rent by the hour.

I finally drove out to her shop in Livermore on November 13, 2023, to take her the Arai Corsair X I had purchased in plain gloss black.

I wanted to know a bit about Daneen during our first get-together. This project had much more meaning to me than my prior lids. I had just finished writing a book about my uncle. He was the very first Japanese American US Naval Jet Aviator and flew over 100 missions in Korea.

His service was after being imprisoned for simply being of Japanese ancestry during WWII. He was awarded a citation from Vice Admiral JJ Clark for his bravery in an attack on guns that were attempting to shoot down his squadron leader. So this one was very personal.

I found out that in 1997 Daneen started with rattle cans, basically spray paint cans in her parent’s home. She began as a sketcher using pencils and derived her inspiration from magazines, concert posters, and canvas paintings she saw as a teen. She’s a bit of a Goth Girl and I appreciate that since one of my gal pals is a Goth Gal, who skates in roller derby. A true badass.

Her first actual airbrush project was her boyfriend’s guitar. Self-taught, she took it apart, at least those parts that she could. She is drawn to old-school pin-up girl art as well as dark death imagery—quite the dichotomy. Think Playboy pin-ups get intimate with the Grim Reaper and you get the styles that instill her creativity. Gothy eh?

I had viewed her website before visiting and although her displayed work looked great, her site was just Meh to me. My intent was not to ask her to build my website, but instead to look at her work. She has some painted items in her shop, some Harley tanks along with other painted parts like guitars.

The most striking thing about my first meeting with her was her laser-like gaze. I seldom if ever get intimidated by someone staring me down. But in her case, her eyes are incredibly piercing. Like a cop looking at you and you know your blood alcohol level is over the legal limit. So WTF does that have to do with painting Mark!? I could see in her expression that her attention to detail and the nuances of things as she spoke were incredible. Match that with the work she has in the shop and it became a no-brainer for her technical prowess.

There were only four ‘must haves’ for this project. The two squadron insignias my uncle flew with were the Black Knights and Pukin Dogs, our last name in Kanji. Our last name means North Mountain. And finally, the 8 Ball nose art which was on my uncle’s training plane. I had sent her some printed work from my uncle’s book in addition to a few photos.

After examining the examples I sent along with some of her research, she asked if I’d like a few items she’d like to include. The name of my aunt, Harvey’s wife, and a reference to something I told her about a flight I took with my uncle.

During that flight in his Bonanza VWing private plane, he told me to “Look down at your belt buckle Marky, and don’t look up.” I did what I was told even though I had no idea why. At that very moment, he started to pitch, roll, and sway the plane in what I thought was a violent manner at 10 years old. He then told me to “take the yoke” and I asked, “What is a yoke!?” to which he calmly replied “The steering wheel.” I then looked up and the entire world was rolling, pitching, and completely disorienting. He then told me to release the yoke. In about 4 seconds the plane leveled itself. Thankfully I had not shit or pissed myself.

I asked my uncle why I had to look at my belt buckle. He told me that doing so prevented me from becoming disoriented. Something pilots encounter during situations like that and how to prevent becoming disoriented. So after telling Daneen that story a week before, she told me that she would put this on the helmet with two arrows pointing down.

And then she said she’d like to put my uncle’s handwriting on the helmet. Since I had included his photographs along with his handwritten notes in his book, she knew that something so personal would be an incredible part of the helmet.

After these two ‘suggestions’ which she approached me about in advance, the rest she just did without asking. And that was fine with me. When I’m hired to create something, I hope the client trusts me enough to allow me to create. I know I don’t tell a plumber how to do their job when I hire them for my home. Well, except to not have a ‘plumber’s crack’ while my gf is at home.

For right now, I’m just going to shut up and display what a true creative can do. Because Daneen is wicked effing smart her observation skills and ability to put what she observes into practice is just delicious, my highest form of compliment. Probably because I think about food so much. So here we go.

And no I did not stay around for 2 months while she worked on my lid along with the multitude of other projects she had going. I would have liked to do that, but I’m sure she has weapons in the shop to keep AHoles like me from attempting to linger around. I will say that when she sent me photos of the effing RIVETS on the lid I was BLOWN AWAY. And even now as I sit with the helmet, I run my hand over those rivets and expect to feel them. They are THAT GOOD.

I did ask if I could photograph as she worked on some other stuff. She’s a pleasant person so she agreed. Here’s some of what I saw.

More things she added.

The date my uncle prevented the ground-to-air munitions from taking out the flight leader for which he was awarded the Citation.

Jet intake ducts

My aunt’s name is on the end of the pool cue.

Aircraft warning area markings on my center vent.

Rust patina that occurs on aircraft on carriers. This was done throughout the helmet.

I requested that Daneen replace the face of the 8 Ball woman with her own to honor what she had done.

Daneen works in two different areas in her shop. For her airbrush work, she simply sits at a workbench and happily sprays away. For her larger work like car hoods or when she is clear coating products she does so in a spray booth.

Of course, she included my four ‘must-haves.’

My name in Kanji

The Pukin Dogs insignia

The Black Knights insignia

And the 8 Ball Girl

And every artist signs their work.

I was not about to let an opportunity pass to photograph another creative. I did this under the auspices of “creating the perfect banner shot” for the article.

Here I have Daneen holding the book I wrote for my uncle

We each choose how we spend our time, money, and actions. What is important to each person is as individual as each of us. Discovering someone who could create something so personal to me that not only represents the honor and history of my family but also protects me. Protects me as I enjoy the freedom of riding. I lucked out.

In addition to her incredible talents and skills, I discovered that Daneen and her shop mate Ginger hold classes for women of all ages from 12 and up on various metalwork skills including welding, bodywork, and prep work in addition to others.  Her motivation is to pass on what she has learned to other women. It is so inspiring to meet people who are not only talented but take the time to help and teach others.

For those of you who want a custom-painted helmet/car/surfboard/guitar/dental chair (Yup she’s painted those too!), etc, I wrote this piece to document my experience. Each of us has our reasons for having anything custom done. FINDING someone is the challenge. And no, I don’t make money off recommending anything I endorse here on Web Bike World or get discounts. I write here to help other riders or small businesses that I’ve used be recognized since unlimited marketing budgets are not part of their lives.

The longer and closer I examine the helmet, the more details I see, and I marvel at how a creative, when left to create on their own is wonderful. I’m not sure how Daneen did some of the things she did, but no matter, I’m not doing anything more than appreciating people like this exist.

Daneen is close to where I live, but so much of her business is mail-in, or in the case of other locals like me, in person. Had I not been local, I would not have experienced her wonderful face-to-face personality. Having said that, even before our first face-to-face meeting, I could tell how intelligent she was through her written conversation.

Sure it’s ‘just a helmet’ Mark, but for me, its meaning and what it represents is so much more. Now as I ride, I’ll speak or more accurately ‘think talk’ to my uncle and father. It’s as if both are here riding with me, and protecting me at the same time. Up until now I never considered naming my helmets. Bikes, almost always. But this time I will name my helmet. Her name is Nadeen. And I will introduce her to Joy, my 2022 Ducati Multistrada V4S Sport.

Incredibly talented, focused, intelligent, and passionate about her craft, Daneen’s combination of skills exceeded what I expected. Not only that, she’s way too nice to be that good-looking. Thanks, Daneen, I’d recommend you to anyone who needs anything creative.

  • Moto Guzzi V7 Stone Ten Celebrates a decade of “The Clan”

  • Typical V7 excellence merges with a sleek black, white, and red paint scheme, bar end mirrors, and a special Arrow Exhaust (sold separately)

  • Debut is anticipated this week at the Verona Motor Bike Expo

  • Availability will be in April for under $10,000 USD

From the Lecco branch of Lake Como comes a special roadster variant.

Say hello to the V7 Stone Ten, a motorcycle that lives up to the reputation of being the “best-selling 750cc-plus bike in Italy” (via CycleWorld).

According to a recent press release, Moto Guzzi has pulled this machine out in homage to the brand’s sizeable fanbase.

What is “The Clan?”

Also called “Guzzisti” (or the “Moto Guzzi Community”), the Clan was formed back in 2014; this is an ultra-dedicated, circa-2014 community of Moto Guzzi fans boasting numbers in excess of 50,000.

We’re told by Moto Guzzi’s website that the community was founded after Moto Guzzi dropped their very first V7 range, which quickly became their best-selling bike.

Today, Moto Guzzi celebrates ten years of their community’s founding year – and in thanks for all the support, Moto Guzzi debuted a refreshed V7 Stone for their beloved fanbase.

A closer look at the V7 Stone Ten

As we already know, Moto Guzzi’s “King of Motorbikes” is powered by the company’s V7 engine, a platform that aligns with a special Arrow pipe, complete with Moto Guzzi-branded silencers.

The end result, if you choose to purchase the pipe separately, is 66.5hp @  6700rpm and 75Nm (55.3lb-ft) of torque @ 4900rpm (the pipe itself is sold separately).

To the power is added bar end mirrors, an ananodised aluminium fuel tank cap and a special livery scheme.

White and black adorns the gas tank, while red shock absorbers, saddle stitching and a red stripe down the center of the tank matches The Clan’s logo on the tank’s side.

A badge reads “Moto Guzzi Owners,” the founding date (2014), and the word TEN, in support of the past decade of Guzzi antics.

When is the real-life reveal of Moto Guzzi’s V7 Stone Ten?

We’re told by Guzzi’s press release that the V7 Stone Ten will be debuted this weekend, at the Verona Motor Bike Expo.

Expect the V7 Stone Ten to start rolling out of dealerships by April of this year.

How much is Moto Guzzi’s V7 Stone Ten?

We’re told that Moto Guzzi’s priced the V7 Stone Ten at a very reasonable $9,990 USD (MSRP) in the USA, or $12,290 CAD in Canada.

BMW’s just released their sales stats, and 2023 has been their best year ever.

Our good Bavarians have been celebrating some impressive sales results for their brand-spankin’ new BMW R1300 GS – but did you know that the success of that one bike has now carried over to an entire year of record-breaking sales?

What was BMW’s most successful range for 2023?

Naturally, our good Bavarians did some extra calculating to check on popularity ratings for their machines – and for 2023, the hype bikes of the year were none other than BMW’s GS range.

Here are some numbers recorded for BMW’s GS family in 2023:

BMW FY2023 GS Range Sales

R 1250 GS / Adventure: ~56,007 (figure estimated to be around 56,000)

R 1300 GS: 4,528

Total GS Sales for FY2023: 60,535

How were BMW’s FY2023 EV sales?

Understandably, BMW’s electric motorcycle sales did exceedingly well, thanks to strategic positioning in more urban-centric markets.

Apparently, the company sold more of their new CE 04’s than expected, racking up a nice +44% of extra sales for 2023 alone.

Even BMW’s C 400 GT and C 400 X scooters did well, showing off a nice +17.9% uptick in sales with 20,460 units rolling out to happy customers.

A successful year indeed.

Markus Flasch, Head of BMW Motorrad.

What does BMW’s Head have to say about this year’s sales?

With continual brand expansion into new markets, Markus Flasch feels fully stable going into 2024:

BMW Motorrad remains the world’s number one in the premium motorcycle and scooter segment and once again demonstrates the brand’s successful strategic orientation.

Based on [innovation leadership, our highly attractive product range and our strong brand], [BMW Motorrad’s market leadership] is ideally positioned and I am very confident about the year 2024.”

– Markus Flasch, BMW Head (BMW Motorrad)

Bottom line, big congrats to BMW for making the best sales book in the history of the brand!
